Last night it was cold as shit. It got into the mid 50’s yesterday afternoon but within ten minutes of the sun going down the temperature had dropped 30 degrees! We had our bags zipped up all the way and initially I was sweating up a storm. However, I did wake up several times during the night by my own shivering. For some unknown reason it is a lot more comfortable and warmer to sleep on my side. I think sleeping on my side makes it easier to bend my legs so my feet do not touch the side of the tent which is of course encrusted in ice. This morning when I got out of the tent just as the sun rose over the cliffs and the temperature was 15 degrees! We had a leisurely morning purifying lots of water and eating granola with honey, raisins, and powdered milk and it was good. I redressed my blisters and we secured camp and prepared for a day of day hiking in Upper Salt Creek. We headed out looking for archaeological sites. None of the current maps plot any of the sites and supposedly the park rangers do not give out any locations (we didn’t bother asking) so I was hoping that the information I had on their location was correct. I was happily surprised when 500 m from SC3 we cam upon Four Faces which appears to be a small compound of several structures including an oven located under a rock ledge with multiple pictographs, the most notable one being of 4 faces which we supposed was a family.
