Holy fuck it was cold last night. The mummy bags were in full effect all night with just your nose and mouth open. We got up as soon as it was light and began to do some camp chores. I got water while Matt cooked up come breakfast. There was ice covering everything and my thermometer put the temperature in the low 20’s! After a fantastic breakfast of pancakes with chocolate chips and sunflower seeds we broke camp and headed out. The previous day we had made it 2000 (2km) meters past the peek-a-boo camp which put us 28 km (~ 13 miles) from our next campsite called SC3. We left camp at about 9 am and headed out. After a long day of fighting brush, mud, and blisters we rolled into SC3 at 6:30 pm with just 20 minutes of light left. This after getting lost at least twice, running out of water, and pulling all of the skin off of my heels. Ouch! The campsite is absolutely epic! We had a splendid view as the last few rays of daylight fell on the massive sandstone bluffs of Upper Jump just as it has since the beginning of time.In addition our GPS unit had been malfunctioning all day because it could not see enough satellites in the bottom of the canyon. Luckily I had read up on compass navigation and was able to triangulate back and figure out our exact location. We figured that after our accidental run up a blind canyon we covered about 15 miles in 9 hours which put us a about 2 miles/hour including lunch break. | |
